Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are health professionals that are specifically trained to deal with the musculoskeletal components of the human body.
Physiotherapists at Headwaters Physiotherapy use a variety of manual therapy techniques, exercises, acupuncture, therapeutic modalities (including taping, pain management), and education. Appropriate treatment for each individual is guided by the most up-to-date research. All Physiotherapists are enthusiastic about helping you and take continuing education courses.
Physiotherapy services are provided pre-and-post-operatively, for acute and chronic conditions, and for preventative measures, for people of all ages.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. The needles are inserted through the skin, into the underlying muscles and tissues at specific points on the body for the purpose of alleviating pain, relieving pressure on nerves, improving mobility and re-establishing normal function.
Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is a precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique, in which acupuncture needles are inserted into anatomically defined neurofunctional sites, and stimulated for the purpose of modulating abnormal activity of the nervous system.
Dry needling is the treatment of trigger points for persons with myofascial pain syndrome. The acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point.
If you are looking to use Acupuncture extended healthcare coverage, book with Dr. Joy McNichol!

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors practice a manual approach, using a combination of techniques, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.
After taking a complete history and diagnosing a patient, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.
Chiropractic care can be useful for acute or chronic conditions, as well as for prevention.
At Headwaters Physiotherapy, our Chiropractors, use different techniques to treat everyone from pediatrics to prenatal to high performance athletes.
Let our staff know a little about your condition so we can assure you are placed with the best therapist for you!

Active Release Techniques (ART®)

ART® is a hands on soft tissue therapy technique used to restore function and reduce pain in the body's muscular and fascial systems. ART treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia & nerves. Using specific movements to release restricted body motion, ART is effective for both acute and chronic conditions and provides lasting relief.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

Athletic Therapy

Certified Athletic Therapists specialize in treating acute and chronic injuries to muscles, bones, joints.
Best known for providing immediate on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes, Athletic Therapists are skilled in returning athletes to competition and maximizing their performance potential as fast as possible after an injury. Athletic therapists do not only work with high-level athletes - they also work with weekend warriors, youth and any individual returning to activity following an injury. They can also be utilized for preventative training, especially with young athletes.
Many insurance companies provide extended healthcare coverage for Athletic Therapy.
Kristin Hodgen provides on-field care to many teams in the area and specializes in Concussion Management.

Concussion Management

Acute concussion management focuses on returning the athlete to sport safely and efficiently. If pre-season testing was completed, this will be used to determine a timeframe for returning to sport. Symptom reporting and constant communication is essential.

Chronic concussion management refers to anyone who has had concussive symptoms for greater than 1 month. This treatment is different than acute management and will be specific to your case - often the neck, vestibular system, or autonomic system are involved. A proper assessment and treatment plan will dictate your course of treatment.

A growing emphasis has been placed on objective baseline testing protocols that can be used to track an athlete’s recovery and serve as a tangible measurement for return-to-play readiness. By measuring an athlete’s “normal” level of functioning, we are better able to gauge the level of impairment that may exist post-injury by performing comparative testing.
Baseline values can vary widely from one athlete to the next, and in young developing athletes, these measures can change dramatically from year to year. Should an athlete sustain a concussion during the season, this allows for a more accurate and objective assessment of an otherwise elusive injury, and provides important information when making return-to-play decisions.
Kristin Hodgen, Athletic Therapist, completes baseline testing at the clinic.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is specialized Physiotherapy that is becoming a first line of defence against incontinence and pelvic pain. It is also beneficial for pre- and post-natal rehabilitation and low back pain that has not responded well to conventional therapy. This type of Physiotherapy involves an internal examination of the pelvic floor muscles followed by appropriate rehabilitation. Evidence shows pelvic floor rehab is the first line of defence, even before surgical consultation, for stress, urge & mixed incontinence.
Kathy Yardley is our Physiotherapist for Pelvic Health.
Please note, there is a higher cost for this specialized service.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a technology that uses shockwaves to treat chronic, painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system. There is evidence for the use of shockwave for chronic tendonopathy.
Shockwave therapy works by neovascularization of injured tissue to help promote healing. This means the injured tissue has an increase in blood vessels after the treatment.
Shockwave can help:
Calcific tendonitis, Rotator Cuff tendonitis, Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Tennis elbow, Stress fractures, Non-union fractures, Achilles tendonitis, Patellar tendonitis (jumpers knee), Hip bursitis, Trigger points, Scar tissue, Bursitis, Mortons neuroma

Game Ready

Game Ready is an innovative Accelerated Recovery System for acute and chronic injuries and following orthopedic surgery. The advanced computer-controlled system can simultaneously apply controlled cold therapy and intermittent compression to almost any part of the body through its flexible wraps. The Game Ready system can be used in the clinic or rented for home use.

Bracing

Custom knee bracing is done on-site at Headwaters Physiotherapy. Braces are used for ligament instability (torn ACL, PCL, MCL) or knee osteoarthritis for unloading the joint. Braces can be used for daily use and return to sport.
Off-the-shelf bracing for ankle sprains, knee pain/patellofemoral pain, wrist strains, carpal tunnel, golfers/tennis elbow, shoulder immobilizers, etc is available. We have a variety of braces in-stock.
A custom or off the shelf brace is often covered by your extended healthcare.
When attending a bracing appointment, please bring a copy of your MRI or Xray in order to fit the right brace for you.

Bone Stimulator - Faster Fracture Healing

A low intensity pulsed ultrasound device has been shown to support and accelerate the healing process of fresh fractures and non-unions.
We are happy to offer rental of a bone stimulator unit (when available). Rental period will be suggested by your Physician.
Most insurance companies cover the cost of this unit, especially with a non-union fracture.

Registered Massage Therapy

At Headwaters Physiotherapy, Registered Massage Therapy is offered to:
• Reduce muscle tension/spasm
• Promote healing
• Increase blood flow to strained muscles
• Aid in relaxation
Our team of Registered Massage Therapists use various techniques, including craniosacral, osteopathic techniques & lymphatic massage.
Massage therapy is very often an effective adjunct to other treatments, such as physiotherapy, chiropractic or acupuncture.
Treatments can be booked for 30 minute, 45 minute, 1 hour or 1.5 hour sessions. Most insurance plans cover the cost of Registered Massage Therapy.
